"The Believer's Mark (Holy Spirit)"
- Rev. Martin O. Erb and Rev. Steven A. Michels

[Romans 3:23]; Luke 4:18; I John 5:6; 4:1-5; [Revelation 3:20]; I John 4:6; [I Peter 1:4; Mark 16:17]; I Corinthians 2:12-14; II Corinthians 3:17-18; 4:1-7; Romans 8:1-15, 37; I John 5:14, 15

All men have sinned and come short of the glory of God and all men have been blinded in Adam, needing their eyes opened so they might see the goodness and glory of God. God chose to be our Father and drew Himself to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. He has marked us. The only thing we have in common with God is the holy spirit He put in us. Having this, we are in His image, as Adam once was. Jesus Christ had the spirit of the Lord upon him. His ministry was to preach the gospel to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, preach deliverance to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, and to set at liberty them that are bruised. With the spirit of the Lord in us, we have the same ministry and ability.

God never sent His Son to do this work without spirit. God never intended us to live our lives without holy spirit, so there must be a purpose for it. The purpose is that passionate intimacy God desires to have with each of us. We have the confidence that God so loved us that He placed His mark on our lives and we can go to Him with anything.

It is the spirit that bears witness. I John 4 encourages us to try the spirits whether they are of God. We cannot do that without the spirit of God. Because of the spirit, we are overcomers. We can do the will of God, whether it is simple or wondrous. For thousands of years, God has been saying, “Can you hear Me now?” The holy spirit that has been placed within us is incorruptible, undefiled and does not fade away. Those who have spirit can hear and understand God. Those who do not have spirit cannot hear and understand God. The things of God are foolishness unto them.

The purpose of the witness is to make God known. We have been sent forth to preach the gospel. We can declare the same things Jesus Christ did. Our eyes are not blinded by the god of this world. The mysteries of God are revealed. There is nothing hidden or lofty in them.

When God sent forth Jesus Christ, it was not so the excellency of the power would be in Jesus, but in God. With spirit, we know with confidence that God will do what He says when we speak on His behalf. He has sent us forth as representatives of Him. Holy spirit brings people from death unto eternal life. We are new creatures in him. Holy spirit gives us the same authority and power that Jesus Christ had who showed us how to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God.
