"Life More Abundantly" - Rev. Steven A. Michels

John 21:25; Acts 1:1; Matthew 22:29; John 10:10; I Corinthians 2:10-14; II Corinthians 10:3-5; John 14:17; 16; 16:13-15; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4,5, 8; I Corinthians 12:1; Matthew 10:1,7,8

The gospels record not only Jesus Christ fulfilling all the requirements for man’s redemption, but also show how the Son of God walked with the Father. Jesus was the Master Teacher who not only “talked the talk,” but “walked the walk.” This walk was, first of all, one of intimacy with the Heavenly Father and a walk with holy spirit power.

The Son of God, Jesus Christ, demonstrated for us a Word-centered, spirit-filled life which glorified God Almighty. When talking with the Sadducees as recorded in Matthew 22:29 he spoke of the need to not only know the scriptures, but also the power of God.

We must concern ourselves with the Word of God and the spirit of God together!

Jesus set forth a tremendous truth in John 10, that bears scrutiny when studying things of the spirit in light of true godliness. When we learn God’s Word, apply it and operate the spirit, we enter into a warfare. Jesus spoke of the thief, which describes Satan, the Devil, the accuser of the brethren, the god of this world. Each time one of these appellations is applied, its purpose is to describe a characteristic. Jesus describes the three things the thief comes for. This is his ministry, goal, strategy and plans. His desire is to steal, kill and to destroy. On the other side we have the true God and His purposes. Jesus Christ’s, God’s representative, came that we might have life and have it more abundantly. Life in this case means in all of its fullness.

The natural man, who is not born again of God’s spirit, cannot know the things of God. He has body and soul but has not yet received the fullness of life described in John 10:10. Having the spirit of God enables us to spiritually discern the things of the Word of God. Thus, spiritual understanding requires the spirit. This works with the Word of God. Without an understanding of the Word of God, we could never try to operate the things of God.

We must recognize we are in a battle. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal. The battlefield is in our minds. We must be good stewards of our thoughts. As we are, God will entrust us with more spiritual things. What we do with our minds indicates how we will handle spiritual matters. We should be tenacious in both our handling of the Word and spiritual responsibilities. As we do so, there are rewards for us and glory for God. We have freely received the things of God. In return, we must freely give.
