The family is very important to God, as well as to our culture. There should be a sense that we are always there for each other. God created us because He wanted a family. Nothing can replace the love between parents and children. We will be looking at love, defined in the scriptures as “charity,” and the different roles within the family. The main thing God wanted was a family that would love Him and each other. God has set the example for us. If there is no love within a family, how can we love God? We must teach our children this kind of love so they will be able to love God when they get older.

The Word of God is the foundation for our families, but love is the glue that holds the earthly and spiritual family together. God’s commandment is to love Him with all our heart, soul and mind and to love our neighbor as ourselves. A family will not stay together without love. It is easy to say the words, “I love you,” but more difficult to show love. The scriptures encourage us to keep or maintain ourselves in the love of God.

God’s Word defines the family as a man, woman and children. The family unit as God defines it is under attack in our society today. We can make a difference in our culture by teaching children what is right.

God has set the different roles in a family for a reason. The father’s job is to set the spiritual standard in the home. The mother is to uphold it. She is the one who is usually around the children and must maintain what is right. The children are to obey. Children need love and direction.

The ultimate goal of charity (love) is that it is practiced. There is a difference between speaking to someone with love and talking down to that person. The way we speak to our children will in large part determine the way they speak to others. We must remember that charity (love) is the glue that holds us together.

Everyone has a role within the family. Love in the family is the foundation of society and promotes spiritual growth. When we follow the guidelines that God gives us, everything functions the way it is intended and our children will see Godly fruit in our lives and theirs.
