Why are we here? What are we supposed to do? These two questions have plagued people throughout the years. The answers to these questions will give us an unwavering conviction in life and strength to do what we are supposed to do. The answers to both of these questions are simple. Why are we here? Because of God. What are we supposed to do? Live for God.
The first question (Why are we here?) has already been taken care of. We had nothing to do with being born the first time, nor with being born again the second time. It was God Who provided the solution for man’s need for salvation.
The easy part is living for God. Pride often keeps us from doing the right thing, which is to live for God. It may not always seem that living for God is easy, but God’s Word in II Corinthians describes it as a “light affliction.”
I Timothy 2:4 answers both these questions. It says that God would have all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Why are we are? To have eternal life, not just in the future but now. We have salvation and redemption now because of what Jesus Christ accomplished for us. We will receive the full eternal weight of glory when Christ returns.
What are we supposed to do?
- We are to love God. This is the first and great commandment (Matthew 22:37-39)
- We are to worship Him. God seeks those who worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:23, 24)
- We should seek to please God. God is jealous for us. He wants our love and worship and for us to desire to be pleasing to Him. He wants us to be obedient to Him out of love.
- We are to glorify God. We want our behavior to be such that people see our lives and glorify God Our lives are bought with a price. God gave everything to us.
- We are to be fruitful. Our commission is to bring forth fruit which is well-pleasing to God.
This is a life-long search. God has given us a treasure. When we discover why we are here and what we are supposed to do, we realize the value of our lives and our purpose. We are here for God and to live up to the name He has given us.
III John 2 says God has no greater joy than to hear His children walk in truth. Why are we here? To be children. What are we supposed to do? Walk in truth.
