God’s Word tells us that in the midst of unrest, we can be peaceful. When we are surrounded by uncertainty, God reassures us that we can have conviction and be fully persuaded. We can be sober-minded and even when fear abounds, we can stand boldly through faith. That faith is through Jesus Christ because by him we have peace WITH God. There is no longer friction between God and His child. Ephesians 2 says Christ, who is our peace, has made us one with God and broken down the wall of partition between us. There is peace between believers and peace between man and God.
Romans 10 gives us instructions as to what we, God’s children, are to do. We are not to preach world peace but rather our message to the world is peace WITH God. We are preachers of righteousness. This is a spiritual reality a spiritual oneness we enjoy with God and each other which was accomplished through Jesus Christ.
But what about mental peace in the midst of turmoil and unrest? God provides a means to turn fears into conviction, timidity into boldness and cowardliness into courage. Because of our knowledge of God’s Word and the spirit that is in us, we can have the peace OF God. The Word of God exhorts us to put His truths to the test and prove they work.
At the very core of natural man’s nature is evil. This is the man who is without God and without spirit. John 16 speaks of times when men will kill believers and think they are doing God service. I Samuel 17 records the account of the Philistines and Goliath. It says all Israel, including Saul, the king, were afraid. Yet David recognized the source of power to overcome the evil. He knew the Philistines were fighting against the armies of the living God and there was a cause. Throughout the Old Testament, we read records of times when the enemies of the people of God came against them. When God’s people defeated the enemies, the man of God was smart enough to ask God what to do. Only God knows what will happen in the long run.
There will be wars and rumors of wars until Christ returns. We eagerly look for that day. God’s Word says in II Timothy that God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind. We do not need to be cowardly. Man’s greatest fear is death yet through Jesus Christ we have eternal life. We will experience fear. But we must remember that through God, we can have deliverance. We can have peace WITH God and the peace OF God as we look to God’s Word and stand upon it.
