Pentecost is a day to celebrate as the "Birthday of the Church." It is a feast referred to as "The Feast of Weeks," "The Feast of Harvest," and "The Day of First Fruits." Pentecost means 50th. This refers to the 50-day period which began after the weekly Sabbath during the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Seven weeks (or 49) days later was the Feast of Pentecost (50th day). Pentecost was a one-day feast which was to be a holy convocation, a special Sabbath in which no servile work was to be done. After completing the grain harvest, each man was to make a free-will offering by giving his first fruits of all God had blessed him with.

50 days after Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead, the first outpouring of the gift of holy spirit occurred. 40 days after Jesus Christ’s resurrection and 10 days after his ascension was the day of Pentecost. In that particular year, simultaneously with the sacrificing of the physical Passover lamb, Jesus Christ sacrificed himself as THE Passover Lamb of God. This particular Pentecost had been in the process of coming for thousands of year. It brought to a culmination the accomplished work of Jesus Christ’s life, suffering and death, resurrection and ascension. This Pentecost was the day men first received spirit by seed and became children of God.

Prior to his ascension, Jesus Christ instructed his disciples regarding the coming of the holy spirit. He taught them what it was and how to receive it. He also told them to go to Jerusalem and wait, which they did. While they were in the Temple (called the house of prayer), the 12 Apostles received the initial outpouring of the gift of holy spirit. When they heard "a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind," and the phenomenon of "cloven tongues like as of fire," it was their signal. The cloven tongues were the phenomenon of Pentecost. God did it just for them. He does not promise to do this for every person who receives holy spirit. They began to breathe in as Jesus had instructed them and were "filled with holy spirit." Immediately upon receiving holy spirit, they began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit (God) gave them utterance. They spoke the wonderful works of God!

There were people of many nations at Jerusalem taking part in the Feast of Pentecost. They were to honor God and express their thanksgiving by giving the first fruits of harvest. The 12 Apostles spoke in languages they did not know but were understood by the nations that were present. This was the Miracle of Pentecost. When operating the manifestations of holy spirit, particularly speaking in tongues, the following principle applies — That you speak is your business; what you speak is God’s business.
On the day of Pentecost, the 12 Apostles were in the Temple when they received the promise of the Father which is to be baptized in the spirit and to receive power from on high. The first thing they gave forth, the first fruits of the spirit they had received, was to speak in tongues declaring the wonderful works of God.

God’s promise to the Gentiles was fulfilled when Peter taught the household of Cornelius regarding the holy spirit. As Peter spoke to them, the holy spirit came upon them. Again, the immediate manifestation or outward evidence of the spirit they received was they spoke with tongues. When they did so, "they magnified God!" They too had God’s spirit in them and were forever in His family.
