"Trust And Obey"- Rev. Steven A. Michels

Proverbs 3:5,6; Psalm 127:1; Proverbs 22:3; I Kings 13:1-27; Acts 27:1-44

Proverbs exhort us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not to our own understanding. Trust is the most intense form of faith. When we trust with ALL our hearts, our thoughts must be in alignment and harmony with what God says He will do. We may have nervousness and apprehension, but we can control these emotions with trust. We come to this place of trust by studying God’s Word, prayer and ultimately putting the Word of God into application. We then prove to ourselves God’s trustworthiness in our lives. We are to compare what we think, know and hear with what God says and make our hearts obedient to His directives.

In looking at the scriptures and how God cares for His people, we see that whenever something harmful was going to happen, God gave a warning. We should develop a habit of walking and talking with God throughout the day so we can hear when God warns us.

I Kings speaks of the account with the young and old prophets. God gave a warning to the young prophet. Yet, he allowed the older prophet to persuade him to do something contrary to God’s directive. It cost the younger prophet his life. When God tells a person to do something, he is to be obedient, regardless of what anyone else tells him. If God wants the person to do something different, He will tell the man or woman Himself. We cannot be deceived by our five senses or emotions, nor can we be respecters of persons.

In another record in Acts, Paul was going to sea and God warned him that it would be dangerous. Since Paul was a prisoner, he was not in a position to make a decision, so the centurion believed his master and the owner of the ship and sailed off to sea. A hurricane or typhoon called a Euroclydon came up and all feared for their lives. Paul, however, told them, that there would be no loss of life. Only the ship would be lost. An angel of the God had come to tell Paul not to be afraid but he and all those with him would be spared. The men on the ship trusted in what Paul said and God delivered them from that adverse circumstance. Acts says that 276 people were saved because Paul trusted God, leaned not to his own understanding and obeyed.

If we have a heart to serve and help people, we can be vessels unto honor as beacons of hope. God will tell us what we need to know to help others.

When God warns us, we must take heed. Like Paul, we can also be sources of comfort and encouragement because we have access unto the Father Who will give us information.
