"Veterans Day 2001" -- Rev. Sixto Aponte

II Timothy 2:15; Proverbs 3:5-8; I Corinthians 12:27; Mark 9:50; James 3:12; Ephesians 6:10-17; [Romans 10:9, 10]

We, as soldiers of the Lord, can learn a great deal from observing the training a person receives when they enlist in the military.

One of the first things a soldier learns in basic training is discipline. Often you wonder why the most menial things are emphasized in training. The purpose was to teach discipline, both mental and physical. If you were able to learn to do the most menial thing, when it came time to be on the field, you would take care of such detail also. We are to be prepared as soldiers of the Lord. We cannot be equipped to take care of the things the world will throw at us if we do not know the Word of God. We are to discipline ourselves to study and apply the Word of God.

In basic training, they teach you to trust the person next to you, as well as the one giving the orders. You must believe what they tell you was right. Spiritually, we learn to put that same trust in God and in our brothers and sisters in Christ. In the spiritual warfare, we must learn to lean NOT on our own understanding, but to trust in the Lord with all our heart.

Another important part of training is to learn teamwork. In the military, you had a job. Whatever you were expected to perform, you did it to the best of your ability because lives depended on what you did or did not do. If you did not do what you were expected to do, everyone suffered. In the body of Christ, we are all under rowers and servants of the most high God. We have a job God has called us to. We have one general If you did not do what you were expected to do, everyone suffered — Jesus Christ — and one Commander in Chief — God.

Another thing you learn is honesty and integrity. You were taught to stand by what you said and do what you said you would do. When you give your word, you keep your word. The same is true with being a soldier in the army of the Lord. Keeping your word will bring peace in your life because there is no strife.

Depending on where and when you were in the service, you either saw a lot of action or you did not, but you were still part of the war effort. We are in a spiritual battle. What we do matters. We must have discipline, trust, teamwork and honesty and integrity to be our best in the Army of the Lord.
