"With Wings As Eagles" -- Rev. Steven A. Michels

Isaiah 40:31; Matthew 24:23-28; Psalm 103:5; Isaiah 40:29-31; Hebrews 4:12; Matthew 4:4; II Corinthians 5:17; [Isaiah 40:31]; Ephesians 2:4-6; Colossians 3:1-16; Psalm 27:14; 31:24; 119:28; Psalm 103:5

God uses the eagle in the scriptures as a comparison of how our strength can be renewed. In life, there are times when things become burdensome, like the old feathers of an eagle that make it difficult to soar.

There are two types of eagles spoken of in the scriptures. One is called a "dirty" eagle or vulture. The nest of the dirty eagle was close to the ground where they could easily gather dead carcasses. The nests of the golden eagle were in high trees, often 70-90 feet above ground. Jesus spoke of the dirty eagle in Matthew 24 when describing false prophets who would come. He said, wherever the carcass is, the eagles would gather. The dirty eagle represented the way people focus on the things of earth, resulting in a life burdened with negatives, anxieties, worries and fears. The total opposite was the golden or holy eagle.

Once every 5 to 6 years, the golden eagle would soar to great heights, then suddenly fold back its wings and plunge into a body of water to put off or lose its old feathers. The eagle then worked its way to the shore and nestled itself into the bushes until its new feathers grew out and its strength was renewed. This took a period of 5-7 weeks. The comparison is that God renews our strength like the eagle’s. When we willingly refocus our attention on things above, not things of the earth, God helps us rid ourselves of the ballast or old feathers of anxiety, worry and fear. We are freed from the things which burden us down. Just as weather and exposure to the elements caused the eagle’s old feathers to be weighed down, our exposure to worldly things will begin to wear away at us, eroding our vigor and strength. We need to take time to slow down and enjoy life as believers. We must make time for introspection, to prepare and enable ourselves to keep going from one year to the next as we await the Lord’s return. To do so requires humility and waiting on the Lord.

Golden or "holy" eagles never eat anything that is dead. That is why we as believer need to dine on the living Word of God. The more we plunge ourselves into the living waters of the Word, the more our old "feathers" are removed and God helps us to change. He is the One Who renews us and we must have the humility to allow Him to do so.
God has made us to be new men in Christ Jesus. But we must put off the old man and put on the new by allowing the Word of Christ to dwell in us richly. As we do our best, God will do the rest.

Let us plunge ourselves into the cleansing water of His Word as we wait on the Lord and allow Him to renew our strength.
